GICLEE and LARGE FORMAT PRINTING

The term "giclee" is a French word which literally translates as a "squirt or spray". It is generally used to describe all methods of digital printing that utilize true archival materials to make a single image or edition of prints expected to last 100 years.

Giclee printing produces the highest quality fine art and photographic reproductions at affordable prices. Unlike offset printing, where an entire edition has to be produced and paid for all at once, giclee printing allows single prints or small runs of an edition to be created, thus, easing the budget.

Heirloom Art Studio uses ONLY the finest photographic and fine art papers, canvas, textiles, flag and banner materials, printers and inks to ensure the quality and longevity of all images we produce. Owner, Kathryn Rutherford, is an expert on colour matching and digital management and strives for EXACT duplication of any artist's or photographer's work.

SET-UP CHARGES
We print from customer digital files as well as our own digital scans and photography, however, for each image being printed, there is always an initial set-up charge to ensure your final edition is closely matched to the original image. If we are using your digital file, either provide the ORIGINAL ARTWORK with the file or a high quality 8"x 10" gloss MATCH PRINT so that we know exactly what colours and look we need to achieve.

ARTIST PROOFS
By historic definition, an Artist Proof is one or more of the test prints created when preparing to "run" an edition of art prints. Each proof may vary in colour, contrast or other details until the final edition look is determined or agreed upon by the image maker.
This variance of prints from the final edition is what historically made these prints more valuable and allowed them to be sold as individual unique pieces of art. They were different in some way from the final edition and, therefore, could not be considered part of the edition. Each is a one of a kind print which can command a higher value or they can be discarded by the maker if he/she determines that they are not worthy of resale.

In today's market, artists tend to choose their own number of Artist Proofs from the edition. Most often it is ten percent of the total number of prints intended to be produced. How an Artist Proof is determined is entirely up to the artist.

Heirloom Art Studio provides ONLY FULL SIZE Artist Proofs printed on the edition media. The customer will see their work full size, exactly as it would appear on the media of the final edition. If the proof is approved, an edition order will be filled and the initial proof may be either discarded or sold as a one of a kind Artist Proof if the customer so chooses. If additional corrections and additional proofs are required, there are charges for each additional proof and the correction time to make the required changes as listed under the Giclee Printing Fees.

EDITIONS
An edition is the total number of prints the maker will now, or in the future, eventually print. If the maker only intends to print 100 prints, the edition is 100 whether he/she prints them all at once, or over a period of years.

An Open Edition is when no limit is being put on a given print and an unlimited number of prints may be run in a lifetime.

All art print editions are printed with a minimum 1.5" border all around the print to allow for artist signature or any identification as well as matting and framing. Due to standard size papers, some prints may have more border.
Heirloom Art Studio prefers to allow the artist to trim their own prints to meet their own specifications.
All canvas editions have a minimum 2" border all around to allow for stretching. Again, some canvas editions may have wider borders due to standard sizing of materials.

Heirloom Art Studio does not supply stretcher frames nor stretching service, but, does offer mounting services if needed.

Odd sized prints are priced at the next highest size.

The minimum number of prints to be ordered at a time is ONE.

IMAGE ARCHIVING
All finished digital files are stored at the Studio indefinitely ready to reprint whenever necessary. Customer's original files and CD's are returned, but, any scans, transparencies or digital files created by Heirloom Art Studio remain the property of the Studio. Only services and prints are sold.
A CD is available for purchase containing finished images in small sizes and resolutions suitable for promotion and web design at an additional fee.
